I’ve been meditating for a few years. Meditation has become part of my life. “Mindfulness” and “Awareness” are two vocabularies even our young son who is only six years old knows.
When I saw Dharma Drum Mountain’s “On the Go” living mindfulness workshop, I decided to go, even though I know it would be a very basic and simple teaching. The more I practice Chan, the more I want to be down to the earth. It didn’t disappoint me. It’s a good quality time I spent with both the organizer and participants.
Chang Yuan Fashi, who is the director of DDM retreat center, was with us the whole time. He taught us techniques to relax our body and mind, which is the very critical part for sitting meditation. Fashi didn’t take the lead during the whole workshop, but his presence has brought us peace.
We did many interesting activities. Those activities brought me back to when I was a young kid. As an adult, do I really know what fun is? The hustle and bustle of life wiped out the joy of eating a piece of candy when I was a child, the joy of rolling on the ground when I was a child. Can I live like a kid again? Yes, I guess so. At least I got to try.
All the DDM volunteers are very graceful and skillful, they made the whole workshop run very smoothly. From tea and snacks to our lunch, to the clean venue, to the lighting, to the sound, to the workshop content. All those details touch me deeply. They really brought Chan to real life.
That day when I got home, my six years old kiddo made a sign sitting on our dining table “Happy Meal”.
Chan is Art of Living.
